“Standing in the middle of an emergency room filled with people screaming in pain, I realized medical school didn’t prepare me for the reality outside a textbook.” This moment, experienced in 19…….by our CEO and Founder, Dr. Karim Qayumi, was the inspiration and drive to create CyberPatient. In 1998, the initial CyberPatient™ proof of concept prototype was completed and featured at the UBC Innovation Trade Show in which CyberPatient™ was judged to be the most advanced and comprehensive product of its type by students, professors, educators, and medical experts. It was still, however, way ahead of its time as technology and internet bandwidth did not support an interactive medium. Dr. Qayumi stood firm on his commitment to revolutionize medical education and support students in their transition from the classroom to the clinic. Following a lengthy technical development stage, the first fully completed module of CyberPatient™ was entitled “Acute Abdomen.” This program segment, completed in mid- 2001, covers portions of the more complicated and diagnostically challenging areas of Medicine. In this first segment, 12 of the most frequently observed pathological conditions are presented. Later, CyberPatient™ was developed for Pediatric Emergency cases and Nursing cases for patient management. CyberPatient™ served its purpose, becoming the favoured interactive education product on the market, and utilized by students and faculty alike. In 2003, CyberPatient was chosen as the best innovation in BC and received the BC Innovation Award in Educational Technology (The Bright and Shiny Award) by the Centre for Curriculum Transfer and Technology. This award was also endorsed by the Knowledge Network.
